PAL – Phase Alternating Line

PAL, Corporate Identity, 2018

PAL is a club for electronic and techno music in Hamburg. The location is below the TV tower in an old underground factory. The name PAL stands for Phase Alternating Line, a transmission technology of colored images in analog television. So, from the spatial connection to the television tower, a name is born. This idea is to be continued in the corporate identity, and the visual works are showcased in a book. The basic communicative concept is oriented towards the PAL system. The logo is an old tube monitor, and the graphic concept incorporates the almost iconographic interfering signals of this time. The translation into the digital space takes the Teletext as its model. The book divides this concept into 3 pillars: 1) the cover as playable vinyl, 2) the disruptive image of analog television as the basis for the layout system and 3) the horizontal shifts typical of PAL can be found as graphic translations.

The PAL imagery
The horizontal interference signal, known from the Phase Alternating Line transmissions, inspired the unique aesthetics of deliberate destruction. Using particular coding, pixels were rearranged and result in a unique visual language.

The playable book
The layout of the book follows the PAL principle. The print space is derived from typical television distortions. The individual chapters are typographically designed like a record player. With each chapter, the record rotates a little further.
