More and more companies are finalizing their fiscal year into an Integrated Report. The idea is to perpetuate long-term and holistic value creation and to document this in the report. Understandable, descriptive and transparent. In 2016 Clariant was the first Swiss company to premiere an Integrated Report. In the following year, it went one step further. For the first time, the Sustainability Report was included in the Integrated Report because sustainability and financial issues are inseparable. They are mutually dependent. For this 2017 report, MUTABOR’s Identity Design business unit was called to implement the principle of integrated reporting even more consistently through content and design.
In 2017, the so-called “Materiality Matrix” moved to the center of communication. In an elaborate evaluation process, Clariant and its stakeholders identified the most “material” topics helping to determine both the content and the design of the report. To reconcile both, representative numbers were defined for each topic and elevated as a central design element. Because numbers speak the truth, they tell how it is, and how it isn’t. Figures are matter of fact in an annual report. But for 2017 they were given a special stage. Clariant displayed figures that established the conversation and told stories. Figures that show where you stand – and where you want to go.
The holistic design concept created the framework for transparency, comprehensibility and expressiveness. For unmistakable messages. The design of the Integrated Report 2017 was thus reduced. It is simple, clear and direct. Based on a design concept that focuses on figures, the design links reporting and narrative within the report. The concept was implemented cross-medially, not only in the online report but also in a subsequently rolled out communication campaign. The principle of integrated reporting was thus carried by the design, making Clariant’s 2017 report not only the Swiss Annual Report of the year, but also a Reddot awarded design project.
Digital Extension The online report is based on the printed design and added additional information and insights, which were condensed to the essentials.
